It is one of the Slavic languages and is a part of the larger Balto-Slavic branch. Ukrainian is the native language of Ukrainians. It is the official state language of Ukraine. The written script of Ukrainian uses the Cyrillic script. The Ukrainian language has a long history and is closely connected to the Old East Slavic of the early medieval state of Kyivan Rus. After Kyivan Rus and the Kingdom of Ruthenia lost their dominance the language developed in the form of the Ruthenian language. It is inspired by modern Ukraine and was also used in liturgical services. The Ukrainian language became common during the 17th century. It maintained major popularity in Western Ukraine, and the language was never banned over there.

It is also spoken in Norway, Sweden, Spain, the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Argentina. Due to immigration, the language became popular in urban areas. About 15–20% of the population of Greenland are Danish speakers. Danish is a descendant of Old Norse and is a common language of the Germanic people who lived in Scandinavia in the Viking Era. Danish derives from the East Norse dialect group and is a Middle Norwegian language. Spoken Danish is different from Norwegian and Swedish.
