It is spoken in Turkmenistan, and has around 719,000 speakers in Northeastern Iran. Turkmen is also spoken by 1.5 million people in Northwestern Afghanistan. The Afghan Turkmen uses Ersary variety and is closely related to Azerbaijani, Crimean Tatar, Gagauz, Qashqai, and Turkish.

It is widely spoken in Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and the Balearic Islands. The language has semi-official status in the commune of Alghero in Italy. Catalan is also spoken in the Pyrénées-Orientales which is the department of France. The language is spoken in further areas in eastern Spain and the eastern strip of Aragon. It is also the commonly spoken language in the Carche area. People who speak Catalan are called Països Catalans. It is a language evolved from Vulgar Latin in the Middle Ages in the eastern Pyrenees.
