It is present in Latin texts and plays an important role in the traditions of the Roman world. Greek by far is a widely spoken language in the Mediterranean world. It is the official language of the Byzantine Empire. Greek is the official language of Greece and Cyprus and it is one of the major languages of the European Union. It is also spoken in Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Albania, Turkey, and many other countries in the Greek diaspora.
