Nepali has official status in the state of Sikkim and is also spoken in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal. Nepali has a significant number of speakers in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, and Uttarakhand. The origin of the modern Nepali language is linked to the Sinja Valley of Jumla. It is a historical language and was spoken by the Khas people of the Karnali region. The language gets its name from Khas Speech (Khas Kurā). Nepali has an archaic dialect and is spoken in Karnali.
