It is spoken by linguistic minorities in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Kerala, and Goa. Kannada has roughly 43 million native speakers. It is also spoken as a second and third language. Kannada has over 12.9 million non-native speakers in Karnataka. Kannada was the court language in many powerful dynasties of south and central India. It is one of the official languages of India and the official language of the state of Karnataka. Kannada has a special Kannada script, which is called the Kadamba script. Kannada has an unbroken literary history and has an extensive Kannada literature.
