The speakers of Javanese also speak Indonesian for commercial purposes. They also use the language to communicate with non-Javanese-speaking Indonesians. Javanese is also spoken in Malaysia and Singapore. The language is also spoken by traditional immigrant communities who are of Javanese descent in Suriname, Sri Lanka, and New Caledonia.

It is spoken as a first language in France; Canada, Belgium, western Switzerland, the United States, Monaco; the Aosta Valley region of Italy, and many other parts of the world.
