It is spoken as a first language in France; Canada, Belgium, western Switzerland, the United States, Monaco; the Aosta Valley region of Italy, and many other parts of the world.

Afrikaans and English are the only languages that are the official languages of South Africa. Afrikaans is very similar to Dutch, but there are clear differences between the two. It differs from Standard Dutch and has a different sound system. Afrikaans was adopted in schools in 1914. It was also the official language in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1919. distinct Afrikaans literature also gained a lot of popularity in the 20th century.
