After Kyivan Rus and the Kingdom of Ruthenia lost their dominance the language developed in the form of the Ruthenian language. It is inspired by modern Ukraine and was also used in liturgical services. The Ukrainian language became common during the 17th century. It maintained major popularity in Western Ukraine, and the language was never banned over there.
