The language is also spoken in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province of Tajikistan. Kyrgyz has a high level of mutual intelligibility with Kyrgyz, Kazakh, and Altay. It is also spoken by many ethnic Kyrgyz former Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Turkey, and many parts of Pakistan, and Russia. Kyrgyz was written in Turkic runes and was replaced by the Perso-Arabic alphabet. It became popular between 1928 and 1940. The language uses the Latin-script alphabet, the Kyrgyz Uniform Turkic Alphabet, and more. In 1940, the Latin script was replaced with the Cyrillic alphabet for all Turkic countries. The language was introduced in Kyrgyzstan when it became independent. The Soviet Union's collapsed in 1991 and was adopted with the Latin alphabet.
